TYPES OF CONGENITAL DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA


  The Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is categorized depending on the location of the defect in the diaphragm.

•  Bochdalek hernias are the most common form of CDH. It results from a defect in the postero-lateral part of the diaphragm. The majority of this type of CDH occurs on the left side of the diaphragm.

•  Morgagni hernias result from a defect in the anteromedial part of the diaphragm and account for about 2% of the CDH cases. It occurs on the front part of the diaphragm.

•  There are other types of congenital diaphragmatic hernia affecting the central region of the diaphragm. Also there are types in which the diaphragm muscle is absent with only a thin membrane in its place. Such CDH cases are rare.
